According to the history books (and Google), someone came to Hungary in the past sometime (can I you tell I love history?) and tried to convert the Hungarians to Christianity. Evidently, some pagans (that's what the website said) didn't like that and so they put this person in a barrel and tossed him down Gellert Hill all the way down to the Danube River. To commemorate this event, there is now a large statue of this person holding a cross and at least some of the people of Budapest are Christians. I am grateful for his efforts, but neglected to get a picture of the statue when we visited yesterday.
In addition, there are now slides on Gellert Hill that children young and old alike can play on. I guess these slides honor his efforts and provide the children of Budapest a way to relate to his being thrown down the mountain. Thankfully, these slides stop well before the river.
We had a great time visiting this area. We saw (rather we smelled the Gellert Baths) which are well known. We'll have to visit another day as it's part of the experience of living here.
We had a great view of the Budapest skyline from the hill.
And had a great time sliding down the slides!
Yet another thing we can do with you and your kids if you'll come visit us in Budapest!
